Job Title: High School Assistant Principal

EMPLOYMENT STATUS:
Full-Time, 215 days.
SUMMARY:
The Assistant Principal assists the building Principal in organizing and fostering a positive, safe environment that is conducive to best meeting the needs of all students, staff and parents. This includes such responsibilities as: leading, directing, counseling, and supervising a variety of personnel and programs; creating effective parent, teacher, and child communications; supporting, encouraging, mentoring, and evaluating staff; fostering teamwork between teachers and among staff and parents; and managing budget items.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organizational/Student Management:
- Assists the principal in his/her duties at all times and acts in the capacity of the principal during the principal’s absence from the school.
- Works in conjunction with the principal in supervising all school activities, i.e., field trips, orientation programs, assemblies, plays, musicals, and other special events.
- Assists in the role of instructional leader to promote student behavior that is supportive and conducive to the implementation of the school’s instructional programs and goals.
- Facilitates the registration process and interviewing of new students.
- Maintain firm discipline while implementing discipline procedures as stated in the Student Handbook. Develops innovative strategies, preventative approaches, and proactive plans for students who exhibit at-risk behaviors.
- Conferences with students referred for violations of the student handbook, administers disciplinary action as necessary, and notifies parents/guardians of action taken. Conferences with parents/guardians of students concerning discipline, attendance, and student behavior as needed.
- Supports teachers who have students with behavior problems and consults with school personnel to find long term solutions to inappropriate student behavior.
- Oversee student driving, parking lots and parking tags.
Student Achievement:
- Assists with scheduling; implementation of goals and selection of instructional materials; analyzes test data; determines ways to improve instruction and student goals.
- Coordinate with the Guidance Department to organize and maintain IMPACT vocational programs.
- Assists the principal in the supervision and evaluation of classroom instruction.
- Assists in implementing instructional strategies, including supporting the needs of diverse learners, delivery methods, assessment, and staff development techniques for improvement of instruction.
- Assist in the coordination of and/or attend case conferences for resource students as required.
- Serves as the chief attendance officer by maintaining accurate student attendance records and strives to promote good student attendance.
Staff:
- Assists with: hiring and orientation of licensed and classified staff; teacher and classified employee evaluation; working through concerns and classroom management; planning and directing meetings, staff development, trainings and in-services; communications; listening, providing and receiving feedback, and encouragement for all staff.
- Assists in the orientation of new staff members to the teaching environment at the high school, especially as it relates to the area of students, personnel policy and procedures and general building practices.
- Assists with the evaluation of licensed and classified staff.
- Is a member of the GKB Safety Committee. Assists the Safety Director in the management of the GKB Crisis Plan, coordination and implementation of safety drills.
- Supports substitute teachers in carrying out their duties.
- Update Staff Handbook as necessary and share expectations/changes.
Communication:
- Acts in a supportive role with the principal in work with parents, teachers, and the community to promote the effective flow of communications and ensure positive relations with parents, business leaders and community members.
- Serves as a liaison with corporation SRO, local police and fire departments, and probation office.
- In conjunction with the Athletic Director, coordinates all high school related organization fundraisers and presents annually to the School Board for approval.
- Present a high level of professional competence through personal study and attendance at professional development activities.
- Maintain a student-centered approach in decision making.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned by Administration.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists the principal in the supervision of all staff.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Master’s Degree in Education and Indiana Administrative license preferred. Valid Indiana driver's license required. Minimum of five (5) years successful classroom experience.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of multiple technology resources for education. Exceptional organizational skills. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all laws, rules, and regulations per district requirements, Board policies, and the State of Indiana.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to speak effectively and present information in one-on-one and small groups of customers, employees, and students.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and use fingers, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and peripheral vision.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The employee is continuously required to meet deadlines with time constraints, interact with the public and other staff.
